What the Record Now Shows About October 7
A 2025 reconstruction set out the full scale of the October 7 assault — the breaches, the waves, the toll. How to pray with the whole record in view.
What happened
The Jerusalem Post reported in a February 2025 reconstruction that roughly 5,400 to 5,600 Hamas-led fighters crossed into Israel on 7 October 2023, breaching the Gaza border at 114 separate points against about 767 soldiers then on duty. It reported the assault came in three waves between 6.29 a.m. and roughly 4 p.m., accompanied by 3,889 rockets, and that the army declared war at 6.45 a.m. before it grasped the scale of what was happening. By 11 a.m., the paper reported, reinforcements were sufficient to halt any further advance, and by midday most of the attackers had withdrawn into Gaza with hostages. The paper reported the day's toll at about 1,200 killed and roughly 250 taken captive, including 364 killed at the Nova festival and 134 at Kibbutz Be'eri.
Why it matters
The first reports of any atrocity are provisional by necessity, and the three accounts on this site written from 7, 8 and 9 October deliberately carry only what was known on those days. A reconstruction like this one is what the record looks like once the counting is finished. It is worth praying through slowly rather than filing away. Numbers at this scale can flatten into abstraction, and the discipline of intercession is to keep them from doing so — to remember that 364 at a music festival means 364 separate families, and that a toll finalised on paper is not a grief finalised in anyone's home. Years later the bereaved are still bereaved, and prayer that only responds to breaking news will have stopped long before their need does.

The poet writes from the ruins of a destroyed city, insisting that God's loving kindnesses do not cease and that His mercies are new every morning. It is not a denial of the ruin; it is a refusal to let the ruin have the last word.
Ways to pray
- Pray for the bereaved families across Israel, whose grief did not end when the reporting did.
- Pray for survivors of the Nova festival and the border communities, and for those carrying wounds that do not show.
- Pray for those still working to account for the dead and to bring home the captive, that their work would be thorough and honest.
- Pray that remembrance would stay particular — names and faces rather than figures — and that the Church would keep praying long after the news has moved on.

Lord of mercies that are new every morning, we bring You a finished count and an unfinished grief. Remember the families who buried their own, the survivors who carry what they saw, and those still waiting. Keep us from letting numbers stand in for people, and let Your loving kindness reach each one by name. Amen.
