Israel Moves to a War Footing as the Scale of the Assault Becomes Clear
A day after the October 7 assault, Israel moved to a formal war footing and the toll climbed. How to pray for a nation at war.
What happened
The Times of Israel reported that on Sunday, October 8, 2023, one day after the assault on the south, Israel moved onto a formal war footing while fighting continued in several border communities. The paper reported that more than 700 people in Israel were thought to have been killed and that 2,315 wounded had been treated in hospitals by the end of the day. It also reported that a senior Hamas official claimed the group held some 130 Israeli captives in Gaza, and that a second armed group claimed to hold more than thirty. Casualties were also reported in Gaza, where the health ministry there reported 413 Palestinians killed. This account was written later from that day's reporting, and reflects only what was known at the time.
Why it matters
