What happened
The Times of Israel reported that on the morning of Saturday, October 7, 2023, Hamas gunmen crossed the Gaza border into southern Israel under cover of a heavy rocket barrage, breaching the boundary at multiple points and attacking kibbutzim and towns including Be'eri, Nir Oz, Nahal Oz, Ofakim and Sderot, along with an open-air music festival held nearby. The paper reported that by that evening at least 300 people had been killed and roughly 1,590 wounded, with dozens of civilians and soldiers seized and taken into Gaza. The paper noted that those first-day counts were provisional and expected to rise. This account was written later from that day's reporting, and reflects only what was known at the time.
Why it matters
A day like this one outruns commentary. Before anyone can explain it, families are searching for children, whole communities are cut off, and a nation is absorbing a shock it did not see coming. The Church's first work on such a day is not analysis but intercession — crying out for the wounded, for those taken, for soldiers and medics moving toward danger, and for a people whose sense of safety has been torn open. Praying early, before the facts are complete, is not praying carelessly. It is refusing to wait until grief is tidy enough to speak about.

God is called a refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. The verse does not deny that trouble has come; it insists that God is present inside it, near enough to be reached on the worst day.
Ways to pray
- Pray for the wounded and for the medical teams treating them, and for the families still searching for those they cannot find.
- Pray for the communities along the Gaza border that were attacked in their homes, for shelter, rescue, and comfort.
- Pray for those seized and carried into Gaza, and for their families waiting without news.
- Pray for restraint, wisdom, and clear judgment among those making urgent decisions under enormous pressure.

God of refuge, You are a very present help in trouble, and trouble has come. Be near the wounded, the hidden, and the taken. Comfort families who do not yet know where their loved ones are. Steady those who must decide and those who must run toward danger. Have mercy on Israel today. Amen.
